Meaning of the word "Mass"
[19/Feb/2002:22:22:54] <fraldash> The word "Mass" evolved from the old Latin ending of Mass which was "Ite Missa est." It meant "Go the Mass is ended." Actually, the word "missa" comes from the latin verb to send, so a more accurate translation would be something like "go, you are sent." I don't really know how that evolved into the word "Mass." though. I can check it out for you and email you.
[19/Feb/2002:22:23:56] <fraldash> I would kind of need a real addy though!!!!!!!!!!!!
[19/Feb/2002:22:28:32] <fraldash> Just to continue a little: "Mass" came to designate the whole Eucharistic celebration and what the word "missa" meant was that we should go out and live what we've celebrated: the life, death and resurrection of Jesus.
[19/Feb/2002:22:29:40] <fraldash> Yeah, that would be how the "ite missa est" would be translated.

[19/Feb/2002:22:30:42] <fraldash> anyone else have any questions?
[19/Feb/2002:22:32:20] <..> Do you have a favorite part of Mass, prayer or phrase or time?
[19/Feb/2002:22:34:01] <fraldash> I think it would probably be the "Do this in memory of me." It sums up the whole Jewish concept of re-presenting what we're celebrating.
[19/Feb/2002:22:34:50] <..> Neat, thanks.
[19/Feb/2002:22:35:05] <fraldash> And reminds us that everything that we do when the eucharist is over is to be done in memory of Him ... the idea that everything we do can make him present in a unique way.
[19/Feb/2002:22:35:59] <..> ST. Augustine's "Receive what you are, be what you receive" concept, yes?
[19/Feb/2002:22:36:18] <fraldash> yeah ... another way of putting it.........
[19/Feb/2002:22:36:44] <fraldash> we're to become eucharist for one another
[19/Feb/2002:22:37:07] <..> Another reason to give thanks!
[19/Feb/2002:22:37:22] <fraldash> bread broken and wine poured out: the real "signs" of the sacrament
