Question:  The Priest at our parish will not wash the feet of women during the Holy Thursday tradition. He says those who had their feet washed at the Last Supper were all men and therefore he is following what Jesus did by washing the feet of only men. Is this a valid reasoning? As a woman, am I wrong to feel isolated/discriminated against by being deliberately excluded from such a gracious act of love? I have participated in this tradition at other parishes I have belonged to and have seen photos in the newspaper of Bishops washing women's feet. I have had this question since Holy Week last year and this year Father P. again did not include the women. Any insight would be appreciated.

Answer:

Hey Jennifer, how are you? Thanks for your question. The choice of whether priests wash the feet of women on Holy Thursday depends on the bishop of your diocese. It seems that in your case, the decision was to wash only men's feet. It is true that Jesus did only wash men's feet at the Last Supper, but many dioceses have moved to washing both men's and women's feet. It is not wrong to feel that you are excluded, but you should voice your opinion to your priest or bishop if you feel strongly about it. I hope that helps. God bless!
