Question:  Can my child be baptised in both the Anglican Church and the Cathloic Church? Is there any ramifications of haveing an Anglican baptism, then at a later date having a catholic baptism (or Visa Versa)?? The reason I am asking this is that one half of the family is Aglican and other half is Catholic, and the whole topic of Baptism becomes quite sesitive.

Answer:

Hi and thank you for your question. Only one Baptism is needed and allowed. The upcoming Baptism is not about the family. This is not a communal decision. This is a decision between you and your wife. You have been blessed by God with this baby. Did you and your wife discuss faith and children during your marriage preparation? Did your wife sign the Catholic promise that goes,

"I reaffirm my faith in Jesus Christ and, with God's help, intend to continue living that faith in the Catholic Church. At the same time I acknowledge the repect I owe to the conscience of my partner in marriage. I promise to do all in my power to share the faith I have received with our children by having them baptized and reared as Catholics."

The likely outcome is that one half of the family is going to be dissappointed no matter what you choose. Families are wonderful; but, now you have a new family for which you are responsible. There are tons of decisions that you and your wife are going to make down the line that may or may not get "family" approval. The bottom line is that you are not going to please everyone. It is not recommneded that you go crazy trying!
