Question: I have a question regarding a sin I recently remembered commiting. I was laying in bed one night and it started snowing, (I was in middle school and was going through a period of getting in trouble for not doing homework) And I remember saying to myself, I would sell my soul to the devil for a school cancelation tomorrow. I know thats an incredibly foolish thing to do. Since then I have been much closer in my relationship with God and in trying to be a good Catholic. Even though I can't remember if I fully knew what I was doing I was wondering if it is considered a mortal sin (I feel very guilty about it). Sorry if this question was a bit long, and thank you in advance for you help. - Sean
Answer:
Hey Sean, thanks for your question. The Church has always taught that three conditions are necessary to commit a mortal sin: 1)serious matter, 2)sufficient reflection, 3)full consent of the will. Now I don't think from what you are saying that you committed a mortal sin. You were probably just laying in bed with a lot of thoughts in your head and just happened to say that. But that's ok, we all make mistakes. If it is still weighing on your mind, I would recommend going to confession to have it completely absolved. And don't worry, your soul hasn't gone anywhere yet. Just make sure not to say it again! God bless.
