Question: I am in search of more information about how I can join the Catholic church. I have been interested in this for a few years. I would be grateful if you could get back to me with some info. Thank you.P.S. I think we will be in contact a lot over the next few weeks.

Answer:

The process is called the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA).  The first phase is the Inquiry process.  It is the time that persons find out more about the Catholic Faith.  Catechists disseminate information about the Catholicism.  At the same time, you will have the opportunity to have all your questions answered. Normally, the inquiry period is about one year.  During this time you will discern, through prayer, if you wish to continue the process.  The second year is one of catechesis and prayer culminating at the Easter Vigil where the candidates (previously baptized) and/or catechumens (unbaptized persones) are received into the Catholic Church.

At the outset, two years seems like a long time.  But, it is vitally important that this very personal decision be made in the context of prayer and catechesis over an extended period of time.  We would be doing a huge disservice to rush people through the process.

As the first step, I would encourage you to talk to the Catholic Campus Minister at your location or local parish priest to find out when Inquiry sessions will begin.

I hope this helps.  And, keep in touch.
