Question:  I stay for the final blessing at Mass each week.  Is it a sin to leave prior to the final song being sung?

Answer:

Dear Colleen, 

No, it is not a sin to leave Mass prior to the singing of the recessional hymn.  We would hope, however, that anyone who attends Mass would not only be there on time but also stay to the end of the entire liturgy, joining in song at the conclusion of the Mass with his or her fellow worshippers. 

I always felt that leaving Mass early (without a legitimate reason) was tantamount to being invited someplace for supper and then leaving before the meal was over: not very polite.
