Question:
I am exploring the Roman Catholic Church. I hope to be starting the process
of joining by the Fall (RCIA?). I did have a question. I read recently that
the Vatican was proposing stricter worship guidelines, including no altar girls
and encouraging communion in one kind, the body only. I remember reading later
that some of these recommendations were rescinded or toned down. Coming from
Anglicanism I value the Eucharist highly, both body and blood. I was wondering
what is the nature of this Vatican pronouncement, and if this will restrict
lay access to the chalice?
Thanks!
Answer:
Hey!
I personally haven't heard about that...it's interesting. I was an altar girl--I
hope that doesn't change!
Anyways, I would advise you to ask a priest about that particular question...they
may understand more about the reasoning behind the possible pronouncement.
Off of the top of my head, the restriction of communion to just one form seems
somewhat suspect. If true, I'm sure there's a good reason, but I think about
Vatican II and wanting to have lay people fully experience the presence of God
during Mass, which is celebrating the Eucharist.
Sorry I couldn't be of more assistance. If you don't get an answer for a priest,
re-post the question and someone with a greater theological background can probably
respond more fully.
God Bless,
Deanna
