Question: How long does it take to become a priest and practice in a church?
Answer:
Like most things in this life there is not one pat answer. The length of time to become a priest varies among individuals depending on their previous education and formation.
In general, for a man to become a diocesan priest an undergraduate degree is required along with a minimum of one year of philosophy and minimum three years theology. Additionally, the respective Diocese may have some other requirements.
A man choosing a religious order will spend, in addition to the above, another year or two in the noviate program. This is the time of formation within the charism of the community.
Hope this helps!
